About the Author

Rick Mahrle has been the coordinating editor for this book. He has litigated numerous construction disputes in court and in arbitration. For more than 10 years, Rick has been an arbitrator and mediator on the construction panel for the American Arbitration Association. Rick has been with Gammage & Burnham since 1983.

Chris Hering joined Gammage & Burnham, P.L.C. in August 2011. He has represented owners, developers, homebuilders, general contractors, subcontractors, materials suppliers and design professionals at all stages of construction projects. Mr. Hering has handled a wide variety of construction law matters, including contract drafting and negotiation, licensing issues, transaction privilege tax issues, construction and design defect claims, delay claims, payment disputes, and mechanic’s lien enforcement. He has litigated cases in state and federal courts and has experience in appeals and complex litigation. Before joining Gammage & Burnham, Mr. Hering was a law clerk to Arizona Supreme Court Justice A. John Pelander and received his J.D. from the University of Arizona, where he graduated first in his class. He was named a Southwest Super Lawyers Rising Star for 2014 and 2015.

Michael R. King is a founding partner of Gammage & Burnham, P.L.C., a Phoenix law firm with diverse areas of emphasis. He has been a construction lawyer since 1979. He received a Distinguished Support Award from the Construction Management Association of America, Arizona Chapter in 2010. Mr. King is the author of the chapters entitled “Mechanics' Liens" and "Stop Notices” in the Arizona Construction Law Practice Manual, which is published by the State Bar of Arizona. He represents developers and both private and public owners of projects, architects, engineers, general contractors, sub-contractors and material suppliers.

Greg Gnepper is a litigation and bankruptcy partner at Gammage & Burnham. He has defended architects, contractors, and owners in varied types of defect cases. He is also experienced in payment disputes and judgment enforcement. Greg is admitted to practice and has appeared in almost every state and federal court in Arizona, plus several tribal courts. He was selected as a 2014 Southwest Super Lawyers Rising Star, a designation awarded to no more than 2.5% of Arizona attorneys.

Kevin Blakley is a litigation partner at Gammage & Burnham who practices primarily in the areas of creditors’ rights, bankruptcy and construction. He has litigated many mechanic’s lien and bond claims and various construction disputes. He is a co-author of a chapter on post-judgment collection remedies in Arizona Civil Remedies (3rd Edition 2011) published by the State Bar of Arizona. Kevin has been with Gammage & Burnham since 1986.

Michelle De Blasi is senior environmental counsel at Gammage & Burnham and focuses her practice on environmental law, with an emphasis on natural resources matters. Over the past 20 years, Michelle has worked at the federal and state levels on various environmental issues, including hazardous waste, real property due diligence, air quality, water quality, environmental health and safety, utility regulation, natural resource damage issues, asbestos, and underground storage tank regulation.

Heather Boysel received her J.D., magna cum laude, from Arizona State University in May 2007, where she served as a Note and Comment Editor of the Arizona State Law Journal. She graduated from the Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University in May 2004, where she received her B.S.E., magna cum laude, in Bioengineering. She has experience working with architects, general contractors and subcontractors related to licensing, registrar complaints, breach of contract actions, payment disputes, mechanics lien enforcement and contract drafting, among other areas. In addition, she has experience in the “real world” of construction that is imperative to guiding her clients.

Heather Horrocks is an associate with Gammage & Burnham. She has worked on construction disputes and other related litigation. Prior to joining Gammage & Burnham, Heather clerked at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Arizona Supreme Court. While in law school, she served as an Editor of the Arizona State Law Journal.
