ISO 14000 Environmental Management Standards (Part 2)

by Ann Strickland

Summary

Part II of this column addresses the fact that once issued in final form, ISO 14000 standards are expected to become a significant factor in business decision making, both in the United States and abroad. Basic elements such as the Environmental Performance Evaluation, labeling, key label terms and principles, self declarations, third party review programs, and life-cycle assessments are detailed. The soon-to-be final adoption of ISO 14000 standards will influence and become part of everyday commerce and trade, not only for the construction industry but for all other industries that must deal with environmental considerations and regulatory requirements.

Ann Strickland, Esquire, is Environmental Counsel at Foster Wheeler Environmental Corporation, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
